The Literacy Council is proud to partner with the Internal Revenue Service to serve as the only Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Texarkana. Last year, our organization successfully processed 72 returns for eligible residents in the Texarkana area, and our team plans to serve many more as we begin to prepare for the 2022 tax season.
In order to qualify for our free tax preparation, people must earn less than $58,000 in household income, be disabled, or have limited English proficiency. Qualifying individuals may choose to work with a certified tax preparer on site, or they may prepare their own returns using the Literacy Council's computer lab and our free cloud-based software. Those wishing to prepare their own returns may also receive assistance from our volunteers if they find they need help.
Debbie Watson (right) serves as the Site Supervisor for the Literacy Council's VITA program and is currently taking appointments for prior year returns for those who qualify and have fallen behind in filing. Appointments for 2022 returns will open up in January.
